History - Bečov nad Teplou

Even in the first half of the 13th century there existed a settlement dominated by the castle with the prince provincial customhouse. The market settlement became the crossroad of trading paths leading from Pilsen to the north and so called Provincial path of Cheb. Scriptural sources mentioned the Bečov castle, built on the rocky promontory above the Teplá River, for the first time in the year 1314. The next important factor of the development of Bečov was ore mining in the central part of Slavkovský les (gold, silver, tin). Tin mining culminated in the first half of the 16th century, and then it was gradually decreasing and finally ended with the beginning of the Thirty-Year’s War. The 19th century became for Bečov the century of development of the road and railway transportation, which initiated development of first small manufactures. In not far Horní Slavkov there was opened the first Czech porcelain factory in 1792. In 1974 there was established the protected landscape area Slavkovský les including the whole region of Bečov. Bečov nad Teplou is an ideal starting point for trips to the protected landscape area Slavkovský les. The main exhibit and attraction of the chateau has been, since 1997, the precious shrine of St. Maur from the 12th century, a unique Romanic relic of the European importance. In the town you can also find the museum of toys and motorcycles.

Except for the already mentioned chateau and shrine of St. Maur you shouldn’t miss other places in the surroundings. These are mainly the protected landscape area Slavkovský les, Mariánské Lázně, Františkovy Lázně, Karlovy Vary, the castle of Loket and the Cloister in Teplá. The town and its surroundings provide many possibilities for the active rest.
