Houska Castle
Houska Castle
The royal castle of Premysl Kings was founded in picturesque surroundings of sandstone mountains in the second half of the 13th century. In the late 16th century, it was turned from a Gothic castle into a Renaissance chateau. Unique murals in the castle chapel evoke the air of the Middle Ages. The massive building on a square ground plan with closed central courtyard passed through a number of building arrangements thanks to which the elements of almost all building styles have been preserved at Houska. A monument of Central-European significance is the castle chapel with wall paintings of the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries that, according to the ancient legend, stands directly above the gate to the hell. The castle area is the scene of numerous cultural events – historic fairs, fencing performances and examples of crafts of the time during which dancers, singers and musicians appear. The programme is completed by seasonal and permanent expositions.
