The village of Karlštejn is situated in the Central Bohemia ca 40 kilometers from Prague on both embankments of the Berounka River. It’s famous for its unique dominant – the late gothic castle of Karlštejn, according to which the village was given its name. This castle is the most visited and the most famous castle of the Czech Republic. We shouldn’t forget to mention the beautiful nature in the environment of the castle, which can also become the aim of your visit.
Even Charles IV supported development of viniculture in the surroundings. Nowadays there is a vineyard with the area of 12 hectares surrounding the village.
History - Karlštejn
The most important and undoubtedly the most famous Czech castle was built by the king Charles IV in the year 1348, except others as a treasury for crown jewels and holy relics. Foundation of the village is related with the construction of the castle. The foundation stone of the castle was laid in the year 1348 and the construction was finished in the year 1355. In 1619 the crown jewels were transported to Prague. The historic importance and all values of Karlštejn were fully appreciated by the end of the 18th century. In 1812 the emperor Francis arrives at the castle and orders to reconstruct and to preserve the castle Karlštejn for next generations. The current appearance of the castle is not completely similar to the original. It’s a result of the significant reconstruction from the end of 19th century, which striving to return to the castle its Gothic look washed down most of the elements of the preceding styles. One of the most precious parts of Karlštejn is the St. Cross Chapel – the place where the crown jewels and holy relics were preserved. The gold plated vault together with 127 panel paintings of Master Theodoricus makes one of the best-preserved Gothic interiors all over the world.
Culture - Karlštejn
One of the biggest actions organized in the village is the Karlštejn vintage, which is organized almost every year by the end of September. Another cultural experience is undoubtedly the visit of the castle. Besides there is the museum of wax figures, the nativity scene museum, the house of clock and the small fortress museum. Other culture life is provided by surrounding villages and towns, where you can find cinemas, theatres or possibly municipal libraries.
Sport - Karlštejn
This locality is suitable for lovers of tourism and cycling. The Berounka River flows through the village. The river allows performing of water sports. Tennis lovers may use tennis courts, which are situated in the facilities of local camp. For more demanding visitors there is an 18-hole golf course at disposal.
Tours - Karlštejn
The Karlštejn Castle is surrounded by five hills, which represent a part of the natural reserve. This area is created by the Paleozoic lime stones and slates. In the environment you can find a mix of limestone rocks with oak-hornbeam forests and oak woods. From other trips we can mention the Chateau of Hořovice, the Chateau of Zbraslav, Chateau of Březnice or famous Koněprusy Caves.

Zvenku působí hrad honosně, uvnitř prázdné interiéry. Za shlédnutí stojí pouze zlatá kaple z druhé prohlídkové trasy. Cena je zcela neadekvátní v poměru co hrad může nabídnout. Za vydanou částku 1.200,-Kč (rodina se dvěmi dětmi) včetně rezervace na druhou prohlídkovou
