History - Mikulovice u Jeseníku

Mikulovice has been historically documented since the Middle Ages. The first written reference comes from 1263. However, the inhabitation of Bělá River valley is older then the first historical written records. We can assume that minimally since the 10th century the area of today’s Mikulovice has been a subject of precious metal prospectors. Gold used to be derived from the alluvium sediments of Bělá and Olejnice Rivers. Remains of this activity can be still found today. The people were coming back to gold mining in later times as well. Very interesting demonstrations of the gold mining remains can be seen on the road from Mikulovice to Ondřejovice, when driving through the so-called “Zlatý roh” (Golden Corner) alongside the Olejnice Creek. Mikulovice were promoted to a status of the Township Village in 1907. Its part is the hamlet of Buchberk, renamed to Bukovec later. In 1960, the formerly independent villages of Kolnovice and Široký Brod including their hamlets were adjoined.

The “Kantoři” theatrical guild performing in the village organized the first theatrical show of fairy tales for children in Mikulovice – “Mikulovický škrpál 2003” (Mikulovice’s Shoe 2003). The “Moms Club” is functioning in the village as well.

Sport - Mikulovice u Jeseníku

The town offers variety of sporting activities and even the town’s surroundings is suitable for an active rest. “TJ Spartak Mikulovice” is active here (TJ = Physical Education Association or Sports Club). The main sports activities here include volleyball, aerobics, soccertennis, table tennis, streethockey, and basketball. There are adults involved in the sports activities, nevertheless even the children participate, and they have a dancing club here too. We definitely cannot overlook soccer – FC TRUL Mikulovice club. The village owns the Sokol Club and sporting center. The Sokol Organization (gymnastics club) operates in Široký Brod (a local community), where there is a nice small sports field operating, which can be used for playing volleyball, basketball, tennis, or you can play table tennis in the local Sokol Club building.

SUMMER RECREATION – the waterlogged quarries in the vicinity can be used for swimming: Vidnava, Černá Voda, and Žulová, or the swimming pools can be used: Velká Kraš (8 miles / 13 km) and Jeseník (9 miles / 15km). Also the nearby Polish lakes became really popular. Both are surrounded by forests and they are the paradise for water sport lovers, fishermen, and holidaymakers. The “Nysské jezero” (Nysa Lake) is situated approximately 3 miles (5 km) away from the town of Nysa and it is known for its sandy beaches. The “Otmuchówské jezero” (Otmuchów Lake) is located approximately 1.2 miles (2 km) away from the town of Otmuchów. The lake is a man-made reservoir built for purposes of increasing the level of Kladská Nysa River. The beautiful riverine forests, the remains of old episcopal game preserve are located in the south and east directions. The Mikulovice town is a straight-out created spot for bicycle tourism in the very pleasant environment with a possibility of getting-to-know the beautiful Polish border area. Trout fishing is available on the Bělá River. WINTER RECREATION – there is a good transportation connection in the village for tourists who like the winter sports – for instance the ski resorts in Miroslav, Ramzová, Ostružná, etc. The tourists can indulge in cross-country skiing activities within the close by villages. The indoor swimming pools are suitable for winter bathing – Česká Ves, Jeseník lázně (Jeseník Health Resort), and Javorník – further information can be obtained at the local Tourist Information Center. The Mikulovice Airport is certainly a local attraction – options for landing of small passenger aircrafts and taxiplanes from abroad including the training courses of powered and unpowered flying.
