Castle Litomyšl

Castle Litomyšl

The first note about the castle in Litomyšl can be found in the Kosmas chronicle from the 8th century. Originally it was a wooden touwer which was after the Hussite war rebuilt into a stone tower. Then it became a property of the son of a Moravian marshal Vratislav z Pernštejna who recieved Litomyšl including the castle in 1567 as a feudality from the emperor Ferdinand. Vratislav z Pernštejna had the castle rebuilt into a seat for himself and his Spanish wife from the family of Mendoz. The building is an exemplary form of Renaissance style with some components of so-called Moravian Renaissance. The architect was an Italian - Giovanni Battista Aostalli. The outer walls including the chimneys of the castle are covered with paintings, those are called "sgrafitti" and their motives don´t repeat. The castle area is complemented by a big garden which was founded together with the castle. In the garden we can find for example a natural amphitheatre where many plays from the Opera Festival of Smetanas Litomyšl take place. The family of the brewer František Smetana lived in Litomyšl, his son, a famous composer Bedřich Smetana, spent his childhood here. There is also a piano in the castle on which Bedřich Smetana played for the mansion nobility.
