History - Nepomuk

City of Nepomuk has always belonged among the most important centers of this local region. Its renown and history are close-knit with the establishment of an illustrious Cistercian Cloister in the valley of Úslava River below the “Zelená Hora” hill (Green Mountain) in 1144. At the place of today’s City of Nepomuk, the two settlements had been present before – Pomuk and Přesanice, which were joined together in 1384. Nepomuk became the center of handicraft trade and commerce in the 13th century. Gold washing and silver mining used to be very profitable in the 13th and 14th centuries as well, and their traces have been noticeable in the local countryside until these days. In 1413 King Václav IV (Wenceslas IV) promoted Nepomuk to the status of the City, which at that time used to be an administrative and commercial center of the monasterial domination with a number of valuable privileges, for example with the right of holding the Christmas trades and the right of beer brewing. A number of historically valuable buildings have been preserved in the architecture even though many of them were affected by numerous fires primarily from the 16th to the 19th century. The most significant intervention into the historical architectural heritage had been the disruption of the square’s southwestern part in the 80s of the 20th century. The functionalistic shopping mall called Úslava was erected at the place of the original historical buildings. Nevertheless, not even this atrocity took away a bit from the Nepomuk’s architectural beauty.

Culture - Nepomuk

Cultural life in Nepomuk wakes up mainly during summer season when fair weather allows holding the events under the open sky. Some cultural events have become a tradition and an inseparable part of city’s cultural life. The International Sculptural and Woodcarving Symposium is the most significant, and it is being held every year for the first three days in July. The visitors have an extraordinary chance to observe the works of artists right on the Nepomuk Square. Amongst the much-frequented events belong the following ones: the Traditional Nepomuk Carnival, Beer Fest, Nepal Fest multi-cultural music hootenanny, Tourist Fall under the Zelená Hora, or Christmas carol singing.

Sport - Nepomuk

The location and landscape of Nepomuk region primarily offers extensive enjoyment for supporters of tourism. The local surroundings are interwoven by a thick network of hiking and cycling tracks that will take you through the beauties and attractions of this region. Supporters of active sports can utilize the tennis courts, mini-golf field in the “Nový rybník” area, gym facility, or soccer field. For the children, the amusement park with variety of attractions or the swimming pool in the area of the Nepomuk Elementary School are available during summer vacations.

Exhibitions of the City Museum show the local customs of this region, and you cannot miss out on visiting them. The part of the Museum’s exhibition is a permanent display of artistic works of the Nepomuk-born art academy graduate painter Augustin Němejec. During summer season, you can visit the Zelená Hora manor house with an exhibition devoted to its history. You can also admire the Cathedral of St. Jan Nepomucký monumental building designed by the famous baroque architect Kilián Ignác Dienzenhofer; the cathedral stands on the place of the Saint’s birthplace house. Among further architectural objects of interest belong the following: the Church of St. Jakub, Chapel of St. Jan, public fountain, Chapel of St. Vojtěch, “Červený most” (Red Bridge), and a number of historically attractive buildings or the remains of Cistercian Cloister nearby Nepomuk. Within the vicinity of Nepomuk, you can visit the “Na Skále” lookout tower above the Železný Újezd village, Blovice Museum, Kozel manor house, Nebílovy manor house, Švihov water castle, Potštejn and Vlčtejn castle ruins, Lnáře manor house, Jewish cemetery and Jewish museum in Kasejovice, Brewing Industry Museum in Oselce, outdoor museum of folk architecture in Chanovice, or Žinkovy manor house courtyard and garden.
