Castle Zbiroh

Castle Zbiroh

The original castle was founded probably in the beginning of the 13th century on a hill above the village Zbiroh. During centuries it went through many reconstructions until its todays neo-Renaissance look. The castle had many owners, one of them was for example Přemysl Otakar II., the family of Rožmberkové, Kolowratové, Lobkoviczové. Since 1609 (when it was confiscated to L. Popela from Lobkovicze) it was owned by the royal chamber. In the 17th century it became a prison for famous people. The last private owner (1879 - 1945) was the family of Colloredo-Mansfeldové. Between years 1912 and 1928 Alfons Mucha lived at the castle. After a huge reconstruction the castle was in June 2005 opened for public. There are two exposition tours you can choose. Opening hours: April - October, Tuesday - Sunday 10 a.m. till 6 p.m.. Expositions out of season: Tuesday - Friday, Saturdays and Sundays only to order, every time at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. At least five people per a tour.
