History - Jindřichův Hradec

Jindřich I was the oldest son of Vítek of Prčice, founder of the line of lords of Hradec. He owned the Jindřichův Hradec estate as of 1220. Indeed it is from this year that we find the oldest written report of Hradec. Jindřich built a Gothic castle on the site of a fortified settlement and so a town developed from the original craft-trade settlement at the foot of the castle in the middle of the 13th century. The town took its name after Jindřich himself. The emblem of the town to this day consists of a golden rose on a blue background, complemented by two royal lions and the initial “W” with a crown (the privilege of King Vladislav II). The lions and W were added in the year 1483. Possession of the town changed hands between three feudal families down the ages: the Lords of Hradec until 1604, then the Slavats until 1693, and finally the Černín family.

Culture - Jindřichův Hradec

In addition to the state castle and chateau, which offer two tours and a tour of the Black Tower (Černá věž), you can also visit the Museum of Jindřichův Hradec and the National Museum of Photography. A number of cultural events are staged in the town, for example the folk festival known as “Folková růže” (Folk Rose). There are also a number of galleries, a culture centre, etc.
