Jihlava Catacombs
Jihlava´s Catacombs is the second largest network of medieval underground passages in the Czech Republic, after those in Znojmo. The total lenght is 25 km, the area covers 5 hectars. The unique system of multi-level corridors was laboriously dug through a hard rock under the historical core of the town. The works started in the 14th and continued till the 17th century. The original purpose was probably silver mining while later it served as a storage of goods for merchants and tradesmen, as well as for military purposes. Large number of underground wells were a precious source of drinking water.
