History - ŽŽďár nad Sázavou

The town evolved from an old market settlement lying on an old land way. Colonisation of the whole region was completed with the founding of a Cistercian monastery in 1252 by Boček from Obřany. In 1607 Cardinal František from Ditrichštejn gave Žďár the status of a town. The core of the town, with its Renaissance former town hall, plague column and gothic Church of Saint Prokop, lies on the rise of the left bank of the River Sázava. The second part of the town with historical monuments lies around the stately home, formerly a monastery, in which the museum of books and Santini’s exhibition are to be found.

The town hosts music concerts and the Concentus Moraviae and České Sny (Bohemian Dreams) events, an international music project shielded by Magdalena Kožená and Václav Havel.

The town’s surroundings offer cyclists a number of biking and hiking tracks, from the Santini and Posázavská trails to the more demanding Moravia and Silesia Regional Cyclepath and the Prague and Bohemian-Moravian Trails.
