Kroměříž
Kroměří is a town that lies on the River Morava in North Moravia and that has a population of around 30 000 people. This noble town of fairytale beauty is full of historic monuments that commemorate tradition, culture, music, and education. Indeed it is often known as the Athens of the Hanácko region. The centre of the town is home to a Town Monument Reserve. Perhaps the jewel in the crown is the Archbishops Chateau, with its beautifully ornate rooms and valuable
collections of art. Indeed the local gallery is world-renowned. The chateau library is also home to collections of historical books, coins, and original musical scores. The floral garden is the work of Italian architects and is able to boast floral ornaments, fountains, arcade galleries, and a garden maze. The gardens and chateau itself have been listed in the UNESCO Register of World Monuments since 1998. Wine lovers will also be delighted by the Archbishops wine cellars, which havea hundred-year tradition of making sacramental wine.
History - Kroměříž
It was sometime around the year 1000 that the Great Moravian Kroměří Castle was built and around the year 1260 that the Bishop of Olomouc Bruno of aueberk established the Gothic town of Kroměří itself. Kroměří was then paid out to the ternberk family by Hungarian lords (Emerich and Stephen of Spí) in the year 1500. The town was then plundered by the Swedes and ravaged by the plague in 1645. Plague once again struck the town in the year 1680. In 1745, Bishop Jakub Arnot of Liechtenstein confirmed the privilege of a Jewish community. Kroměří was then occupied by Napoleonic forces in 1805 and was granted autonomous status in 1870. The historic part of the town was renovated in the years after 1990, but was unfortunately hit by massive floods in July 1997. The gardens and chateau here were registered as a UNESCO site in 1998.
Culture - Kroměříž
The FORFEST Festival, an international festival of contemporary art with intellectual orientation, has been held since the beginning of the 1990s and concentrates on the contemporary music scene, whilst returning intellectual content to contemporary art. Events are staged in the attractive surroundings of the Archbishops Chateau, the impressive churches in Kroměří, and in the beautiful gardens.
