Modrá
The Modrá village is located in the southeastern elongation of Chřiby about 4 miles (6 km) from Uherské Hradiště. It is closely adjacent to the famous Velehrad place of pilgrimage. Modrá is principally known as an archaeological site. Just here, at the “Na Díle” location, the substructure of a smallish church had been found, and it probably used to stand here several decades before Cyril and Metoděj (Cyrillus and Methodius). It is apparently a building belonging to the
residence of Irish missionaries who came to Moravia from Solnohrad in the first half of the 9th century. The School of Rural Areas Reconditioning resides in Modrá and this village has been awarded several times the title of the most beautiful village in the Czech Republic.
History - Modrá
Since the second half of the 16th century, the farmyard with a sheepfold appurtenant to the nearby Velehrad Cloister used to stand at the place where Modrá village has been founded. The Modrá village itself was founded in 1786 after abolishment of the cloister by Josef II. The village residents have usually made living by working in forests or farmyards. The original name Neudorf (New Village) quite suggests that the village has been founded within the earlier-occupied area. The oldest and numerous discoveries prove that the agriculturists had lived at this place already in the Neolithic Age, thus some 7 thousand years ago, and the earthenware with lines and ungual notches predicate about their craftsmanship. The discoveries of stone axes and ungual wedges are very common together with the splinters from the New Stone Age (the Neolithic Age of 4,000 – 2,000 B.C.), and these findings also support an existence of settlements of a more permanent character. Aside from the other significant discoveries, the ovens with residues of plaster and very rare fragments of so-called Braubach dishes had been found, and these are the proof of the very first Celtic existence.
Culture - Modrá
The village social life is very opulent. Particularly the traditional events are significant. For example in January - masked ball on ice, Three Wise Men, Rikitan’s competition (Junák). February – Shrovetide, burying the contrabass. March – springtime opening, Josef’s playing and tasting. April – Svojsík’s competition (Junák). May – erecting and cutting the maypole. Jun – children’s day, laundry tub competition. July – carnival and entertainment, children’s summer camps and trips, soccer derby with Velehrad team. September – chinwag with half-fermented young wine. October – a get-together on the highest peak of Chřiby (formation of the Czechoslovak Republic state). November – Catherine jamboree, tasting of young wines. October – St. Nicholas’ Day, erecting the Christmas tree, Bethlehem light (visiting the elderly and ill persons while singing the carols), a get-together by the Christmas tree. The large contribution of the local Junák organization is worth of mentioning. Local distinctions: the Modrá village stands out by a thought-out and large-scale care for the countryside and greenery, same as by working on the village renovation with the youngest residents. If you come here for an inspiration, you will certainly get fascinated by an artistic design of local road pavements too.
Tours - Modrá
The “Archeoskanzen” (Archeological Outdoor Museum) is the primary destination of the village visitors. You can visit the lookout tower not faraway from the village, you can see the hewed stone structure about 2.5 miles (4 km) north of Modrá, the so-called “Králův stůl” (King’s Table), which used to be the part of prehistoric solar calendar. Also the marked bicycle path from Uherské Hradiště to Zdounky will lead you to it. The nature trail leads through the village to the complex of fishponds (option of swimming, fishing using the village permit). You can find a number of very significant and attractive tourist destinations in the village vicinity.
