The name captured the enchantment of the intellectual and social cream of that time with the beauty of the local countryside. There are numerous rock formations to admire in the surrounding areas, picturesque valleys, examples of folk architecture, castles, chateaux, churches, rare minerals, and botanical attractions. One of the most dominant features of the region withoutdoubt includes the ruins of Trosky Castle, with the adjacent ponds, rock massifs, and sandstone paths..

The history of the first settlement of the land in this area began some 350 000 years ago. The Celts settled the lower part of the area in the fourth century B.C. They were followed by the Germans and after they left, the first Slavs arrived. The Přemyslids then ruled the land here during the 10th century. The campaign of the Hussite army saw a large number of monasteries and castlesin this area plundered and set alight. The Bohemian Estate took charge of these ravaged lands and began to administer them. Albrecht of Valdštejn then took up the confiscation of property that remained after the Bohemian Estate. It was he that chose the town of Jičín as the centre of all events, culture, and education. The area was once again drastically destroyed and plundered during the Thirty-Year War. It was again hit by destruction some 200 years later as a result of the Russian-AustrianWar, whose battles were fought in the surroundings of Mnichovo Hradiště, Kost, Jičín, and Turnov. Bohemian Paradise was declared a protected landscape area in 1954 and the Czech Republic is currently making efforts to have the area entered in the UNESCO Register of World Heritage Sites under the category of “natural landmark”.

The most attractive points of Bohemian Paradise naturally include the strangely shaped rock formations, which you can simply marvel at. Among the most attractive excursions during the summer is a tour of the castles of Hrubý Rohozec, Trosky, and Valdštejn and the chateaux of Sychrov and Humprecht, the Prachov area and the nearby Prachov Rocks. The wooden bell tower in Rovensko pod Troskami is also worthy of note, whilst there are some fine examples of folk architecture in the town of Sobotka and the village of Karlov.
