Decin region and Luzice Mountains
Děčín Region and “Lužické hory” (Lusatian Mountains)
This border region at the northern part of the Czech Republic spreads out from Děčína all the way to Liberec. The main formations of this regions are the following: “Labské pískovce” (Elbe Sandstones) Nature Reserve, “České Švýcarsko” (Czech Switzerland) National Park, “šluknovská pahorkatina” (Šluknov Highland), “Lužické hory” (Lusatian Mountains) Nature Reserve, and “Ještědský hřbet”
(Ještěd Ridge) with the Ještěd Nature Park as its part. All this area is characterized by a natural beauty and by the well-preserved folk architecture. More then a half of the territory is covered by large-scale forests.
The Elbe Sandstones area is primarily known for its rock massifs. The unique rock town in the “Tiské stěny” (Tiská Walls) is their part. They are the favorite tourist and rock climber’s spots. They often use the sandstone towers for training.
TheČeské Švýcarsko National Park connects to this location. Millions of years ago, a shallow sea had spread out through this region. The Pravčická brána (Pravčická Gate) is a symbolic example. A visitor of this region has an opportunity to see the sightseeing spots, out of which he can enjoy the view to one of the most beautiful corners of our country. One of such places can certainly be the Sněžník lookout tower.
The northern part of Šluknov projection is filled out by theŠluknov Highland that is similar to Šumava foothills in its appearance and ruggedness. The gentle highland with wide valleys is densely populated. It is covered by pine forests having beautiful views and by a number of nature sights. There are many historical and architectural sights in the vicinity of Šluknov and within the city itself. We should not forget the Mikulášovice, Rumburk, and Jiříkov as well.
The Lusatian Mountains are the border sierras of smaller size. The area islargely covered by forests. The following sights can be found here: a well-preserved folk architecture and the ruins of several castles as the historical sights – Tolštejn, Kamenický Castle with a lookout tower, the ruin remains of Milštejn, Fredevald and “Starý Falkenburk” (Old Falkenburk). Among the other sights we can for instance find the “Dutý kámen” (Hollow Stone) with a sundial, “Panská skála” (Lord’s Rock) by the Kamenický Šenov, “Naděje” (Hope) waterreservoir, the spots of faraway vistas called “Klíč” (Key), Luž, “Hvozd” (Thick Forest), and Jedlová. The interesting sights can be also found in the cities of Varnsdorf, Jablonné v Podještědí, Nový Bor, Cvikov, and Česká Kamenice. The Jiřetín pod Jedlovou, “Křížová hora” (Crucial Mountain), or the Chřibská with the oldest glass factory in Europe are the interesting sites as well.
An area between the Lusatian Mountains and the City of Liberec is filled upby the Ještěd Ridge. The highest mount of this ridge – the Ještěd (1107 yards / 1012 meters) – markedly dominates the entire region and it is a symbol of Liberec and even a symbol of Liberec County. The picturesque countryside of pine forests is primarily known within its eastern part, where there is a favorite winter sports center found – the Ještěd Resort. The Ploučnice River heads on the slopes of Ještěd.
All the above-stated locations have one more phenomenon incommon indeed. All can be enjoyed by the lovers of all types of sports, and by the lovers of hiking, nature beauty and historical sights.
