The history of Lednice The name of “Lednice” first appears in written sources that date back to the 13th century, when the place was ruled by the powerful Austrian family of Sirotek. A considerable part of the area then belonged to the Liechtenstein family during the 14th century. It was this family that transformed the local frontier castle into a grand Renaissance residence, which was later redeveloped in the spirit of English neo-Gothicism during the 19th century and is now considered to be one of the pearls of South Moravia. The history of Valtice Valtice is an ancient settlement, the first written reports of which date back to the 12th century. It was at this time that the place came under the wing of the Seefeld family, which had a mighty, grandiose castle built. A town subsequently developed in the area beneath the castle. The Liechtenstein family then became the owners of the entire estate of castle and town during the 14th century and it was under the rule of this family that a chateau, parish church, monastery, hospital, a number of smaller chateaux, a colonnade, and Diana’s castle known as Rendez-vous were all built. Valtice also gained fame thanks to its wine, which competed with some of the better Austrian varieties, and its two hospitals. The dukes of Liechtenstein transformed their estate into one big park between the 17th and 20th centuries, a park in which the Baroque and neo-Gothic architecture of the chateaux met smaller structures in the Romantic spirit.

The rare flora and fauna in the area is protected as part of a UNESCO biospheric reserve.
