Moravian karst and Brno area
The Moravian Karst is the most significant karst protected by the Czech Republic. It stretches out from just a few kilometres from Brno and is part of the Drahanská Vrchovina (Drahan Highlands). It is a strip of limestone measuring 2-6 km across and about 26 km long. The dominant features of the Karst are Propast Macocha (Macocha Chasm) and four accessible caves. Of course, the Moravian Karst is not only underground, but also includes beautiful countryside, deep canyons, bizarre rock
formations, romantic ruins of castles, brooks disappearing through the earth and then springing out again, many technical and historical monuments and many other interesting things besides.
Many walking trails and cycle paths can be found in the surroundings to lead visitors to attractive places such as Skalní Mlýn (Rock Mill), Býčí Skála (Bull Rock), Máchův Památník (Mácha’s Memorial), Blansek, Nový Hrad (New Castle) etc. In Winter the Moravian Karst and Drahan Highlands areinterwoven with many ski runs, both for downhill and cross-country skiers. Another very pleasant experience to be had is floating on a dinghy on the underground stream in Punkevní Jeskyně (Punkevní Cave), from which you can be transported by cable way.

Propast Macocha (Macocha Chasm) is undoubtedly one of the most interesting phenomena here, the deepest and largest chasm in the Czech Republic and Central Europe. From the higher viewing bridge at the top to the very bottom is a distance of 138.5 m. It came into being with the collapse of the ceiling of a large underground chamber. At the bottom there are two pools, which are filled by the Punkva River. It is possible to reach the bottom via the Punkevní Caves. The chasm is one of the most interesting and beautiful phenomena in the Moravian Karst. Walkers can access the chasm via the two viewing bridges.
Points of interest and phenomena Punkevní jeskyně (Punkevní Cave), Jeskyně Balcarka (Balcarka Cave), Jeskyně Kateřinská (Kateřinská Cave), are just some of the interesting places which are well worth a look. If you are interested in historical monuments, you can visit the ruins of Hrad Blansek (Blansek Castle), Boskovice castle, Nový hrad (New Castle), the ruins of Holštejn castle, Boskovice stately home and Zámek Rájec nad Svitavou (Rájec nad Svitavou Stately Home).
