A district town of an immemorial mining tradition situated in the central part of the Štaivnické vrchy hills. Thanks to numerous architectural and technical monuments, it was inscribed on the the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993. In the centre of the town with a partially preserved bullwark (e.g. the Piargská gate), there is the "Old Castle" from the 16th century, the Romanesque basilica of St. Mary the Virgin from the 13th century, or the Late Gothic Roman-Catholic church from the early 16th century. The Square of St. Trinity is bordered by Renaissance town houses from the 16th - 17th century, with a Baroque plague column in the middle. Slovak Mining Museum has its seats in Kammerhof, a building of the 16th century. The New Castle from the 16th century mounts above the town. Remains of mining activities from the past centuries, like collieries, stolles, and water reservoirs for mining. can be found in the vicinity of the town.
