Bardejov - Protected Town Reserve
Bardejov - Protected Town Reserve
A district town in the valley of the Topla River, first mentioned in the 1st half of the 13th century. The centre of the town built on an original medieval ground plan with the well-preserved precious monuments was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in 2000. The Town Hall Square is bordered by Gothic houses, mostly rebuilt in Renaissance or Baroque style. The Gothic-Renaissance Town Hall dates to early 16th century. Another valuable sacral monument is the Roman-Catholic Basilica of St. Egidius from the mid-15th century. Interesting architecture can be seen also in the lanes of the old town, enclosed with a bullwark - one of the best preserved in Europe. A rare complex of original Jewish buildings of the former Jewish quartier with a synagogue of the 18th century has been preserved west of the fortified area of the town.
