Vlkolínec - Monument of Folk Architecture
Vlkolínec is a unique example of an original mountain village with typical mountain homesteads and other rustical houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, under Sidorovo Mt. The first documentary records of the village dates from 1376. It is the best preserved and most integrated complex a folk settlement in Central Europe. A set of timberbuilt houses, walls coated with clay and whitewashed or painted blue, roofs are covered with wooden shingles. There is a belfry built in 1770 or a windlass well from 1860. The Pheasant House is a seat of the exposition of the Liptov Museum. Displayed are typical period interiors. 18 houses, out of the total 55, are permanently inhabited. The village was declared a National Cultural Monument in 1977 and since 1993 it has been registered on the List of the World Natural and Cultural Heritage of the UNESCO.
